Chapter TwelveAfter tossing and turning all night long, Rebecca woke up feeling more tired than before she went to bed. She was lying there, staring aimlessly at the ceiling, trying to get the energy to drag herself up, when the first wave of nausea hit her. Flinging back the covers, she scrambled to the bathroom, hoping to make it in time. Falling to her knees, she lost what looked like most of last night’s supper. “Oh great,” she muttered as she grasped the sides of the porcelain bowl for support.

Then it struck her. She’d just had her first bout of morning sickness. Suddenly, her pregnancy was real to her in a way that it hadn’t been yesterday. There was a whole new little person inside of her, waiting to be born. She rose unsteadily to her feet, grinning like a fool and kept smiling even as she brushed her teeth and rinsed her mouth. Not an easy feat.

A quick shower had her feeling better in no time at all. She was suddenly energized. She made the bed, got dressed, hurried downstairs and was whipping up a batch of pancakes when Casey entered the kitchen with her doll in tow.

Breakfast was a quick affair, or as quick as it could be with a four-year-old. Casey ate slowly, chewing every small piece of food about twenty times. Rebecca passed the time planning and decided that if she finished sewing the dress she was working on this morning, she and Casey would have the whole afternoon to do something special.

She was so caught up in her plans that she didn’t notice Casey was less active than usual, almost withdrawn, as she ate her breakfast. And when she settled in to play quietly in the sewing room an hour later, Rebecca assumed the child was merely tired and missing her Uncle Jake. Taking advantage of the uninterrupted time, Rebecca put her head down and sewed, hoping to get finished before she got bored with her play.

“It’s finally finished. What do you think?” Rebecca held the peach-colored dress up in front of her and looked toward Casey to get her opinion. The coloring book was lying open on the floor with crayons scattered all around it, but there was no sign of the little girl.

Rebecca frowned as she got up from the sewing machine and laid the dress across the chair. She hadn’t heard Casey leave the room.

“Casey. Where are you sweetie?” Rebecca checked the kitchen first. No Casey. She went upstairs. Maybe she had wanted to get one of her other toys to play with. Rebecca looked in Casey’s room. No Casey.

“Stay calm. Stay calm,” she repeated as she hurried to check her own room. She rushed from room to room calling Casey’s name. Nothing. Not a sign or a sound. She raced down the stairs and checked the living room and the office. Nothing.

That’s when she noticed the back door was open a crack.

“Oh my Lord.”

She raced to the door, jerked it open, and looked out, hoping to see Casey playing in the yard.
